Here’s the direct, expert-backed method for choosing a diamond.
Buying a diamond shouldn’t feel overwhelming. The key is understanding what actually makes a diamond beautiful and which details matter less than people think.
This guide gives you the essentials so you can shop confidently and avoid common mistakes.
1. Start With Cut (Sparkle Comes First)
Cut determines how much light the diamond returns. The amount of sparkle comes first in your diamond selection. A well-cut stone looks bigger, brighter, and more alive. You want to optimize these features over size, in order for your diamond to sparkle not only in the showroom, but at work, in daylight and at evening outings.
Choose:
- Excellent cut for round diamonds
- Ideal proportions for fancy shapes (oval, cushion, emerald, radiant, pear)
Why it matters:
A flawless, colorless diamond will still look dull if the cut is poor. We steer our clients away from Very Good and Good grades.
2. Choose Your Shape Based on Style
Each shape has its own personality and visual effect. Your lifestyle and hand shape help determine the best look. A long and lean mirrored cut will not look the same on everyone’s hand.
In general:
- Round: most sparkle
- Oval: elongated, looks larger
- Cushion: soft and romantic
- Emerald: clean lines, quiet luxury
- Radiant: bold brilliance
- Pear: unique and flattering
3. Choose Color Based on Metal
Color is about how white the diamond looks. Paying a premium for a higher color grade may be lost in a yellow or rose gold setting, and similarly H and J diamonds may look less brilliant in white gold or platinum settings.
We recommend:
- Platinum/White Gold: D–H
- Yellow/Rose Gold: G–J
It should be noted, that cut affects how you see color more than the grade itself.
4. Choose Eye-Clean Clarity
You don’t need the highest clarity grade. You just need inclusions that aren’t visible without magnification. Inclusions provide a unique fingerprint for each precious stone. Selecting the right stone is also impacted by the setting. If we have an SI1 with an inclusion visible with the naked eye upon close inspection, and we know it is in the location of one of the prongs or covered with the bezel setting, you may wish to proceed with the selection of that stone. VVS2 and above is rarely different from VS2 and above with the naked eye. At this point, selecting the higher grade becomes a matter of preference and budget.
Best value: VS1, VS2, SI1 (when eye clean)
5. Understand Carat vs. Size
Carat measures weight, not visual size. A well-cut 1.3ct could look larger than a deeply cut 1.5ct. We show side-by-side comparison videos so you can see shape, spread, and sparkle yourself.
6. Trust Visuals Over Numbers
Two diamonds with identical certificates can look completely different. Always evaluate the diamond in different lighting. As you see the amateur pictures and videos on Social Media, this is intentional. It is ideal to show the different rings in overhead lighting, daylight, cloudy, sunny, shadows, indoor lighting and night/restaurant lighting. We would never want our client to leave the showroom overhead LEDs and be disappointed with their purchases.
Assure you view all pieces, especially high end or daily wear jewelry in:
- daylight
- indoor lighting
- shadows
- overhead LEDs
- restaurant lighting
This is where the Laguna Diamond curation process makes choosing easy.
